When a pipe bursts or a car won’t start, people don’t shop around for long. They search on a phone, look at a few businesses and call one. If you run an auto shop, a plumbing company or a home-service business, your job is to look complete, trustworthy and easy to call in those few seconds. Most of that happens on your Google profile.

What do customers check first when they need help fast?
They see your name, rating, review count, hours, photos and a phone button before they see your website. Google’s local ranking page says complete, accurate information makes a profile more likely to show up for relevant searches, and lists business hours, category, photos and replies to reviews among its tips. Google also says results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence, and that you can’t pay for a better ranking.
Should my profile say I’m open for emergencies?
Only if it is true. Google’s guidelines ask for your regular customer-facing hours and a phone number you control. If you really answer calls at night, set hours that show it. If you don’t, don’t imply it. A customer who finds a closed shop or a dead phone line won’t come back. For after-hours calls, see how a text-back can beat voicemail.
How do I show the areas I serve?
If you travel to customers, you can hide your address and list a service area. Google says service-area businesses should have one profile for a central location with a defined service area. Keep it to places you truly serve, such as Peoria, Glendale and Surprise if that is your range. Google doesn’t say that a longer list helps you rank, so don’t pad it. Details are in our service-area setup guide.
What proof makes a stranger trust me?
For jobs where someone lets you into their home or trusts you with an expensive repair, three things do most of the work: recent reviews with replies, photos of your real work, and clear details such as your license number if your trade requires one. Google’s photo tips suggest at least three photos of your work or services and three of your team, and say photos should represent reality. I can’t tell you how much any of this moves your rank, because Google doesn’t say. I can tell you it helps a nervous customer decide.
Where can I get trade-specific help?
We have separate guides for plumbers, HVAC, roofers, electricians and auto repair shops. You can also read our pages on auto shop marketing and contractor marketing.
What should I do this week?
- Search your main service plus your city on your phone and note who shows up first.
- Check that your phone number, hours and service area on Google are correct.
- Add three real photos of your work and three of your team or shop.
- Text your review link to your last five happy customers.
- Reply to every review that doesn’t have an answer.
- Call yourself while you are on a job and see what a customer experiences.
Quick answers
Do I need a website too?
You can have a profile without one. A clear site with a phone number and your service area helps customers who want to know more before they call.
Is it worth running Google Ads?
It can be, but it is a separate decision from your free profile. Our post on local SEO vs. Google Ads compares them.
How soon will I see results?
It depends on your market. Fixing wrong details can help right away. Reviews and reputation build over time. Read how long local SEO takes.
