When someone’s AC dies or a tire goes flat, they search on their phone and call one of the first three businesses they see. This guide is about being one of those three.
Time needed: about 3 hours to set up, then 30 minutes a week. Cost: $0. Honest note: results depend on your business, your competition and how consistently you follow through. We can’t promise rankings, but every move below is something Google rewards.
Real results from a real Peoria business
NFL Cuts Barbershop went from 187 to 320+ Google reviews in about a month
No discounts, no freebies, no fake accounts. Just a clean Google profile, a real website, and asking every customer the right way. That’s Moves 1, 5 and 6 below. Read the full case study.

Rewrite your Google description so it matches what customers type
Most profiles say “family owned, quality service since 1998.” Customers type “emergency plumber Glendale.” If your profile never says what you do and where, Google has nothing to match. Write down your top 3 services, the city and neighborhoods you want, and one true reason to pick you. Then run this prompt.

List every service by name, with one plain sentence each
Don’t write “Brake services.” Write “Brake pad and rotor replacement. Most cars done same day. We show you the worn parts first.” Each named service is one more thing Google can match to a search. Keep your list in a Google Sheet (Service, Description, Last Updated) and review it every 90 days.

Move 3 · 15 minutes a week
Post real photos, three a week
Your own shop, your own truck, your own team beats stock photos every time. Snap three photos on your phone each week: a finished job, your crew, the front of your building. Add them to your profile. Customers use photos to decide who to call, and a profile with fresh photos looks alive.
Move 4 · 1 hour, once a month
Turn your posts into phone calls: Problem, Reason, Action
“Happy Monday!” never made a phone ring. Every post needs three parts: a problem your customer has right now, a real reason to act this week (open appointments, a seasonal deadline, a true offer), and an action: tap the Call button. Don’t type your phone number into the post text, because Google can reject posts that do. Only claim urgency that is true.

Move 5 · Daily habit
Ask every customer for a Google review
This is how NFL Cuts added more than 130 reviews in about a month. Get your review link from your Google profile (“Ask for reviews”), turn it into a QR code, and put it on the counter, the receipt and a text. Then ask every customer, not just the ones who look happy. A friendly line works: “If we took good care of you today, a quick Google review helps us a lot. I can text you the link.”
Move 6 · 10 minutes a week
Reply to every review, good and bad
Replies show new customers you care and show Google your profile is actively managed. Keep it short and human: thank them by name, mention the service, and invite them back. For a bad review, stay calm, apologize for the experience, and offer to fix it offline. The next customer is reading your answer, not just the complaint.
Move 7 · One afternoon
Own your neighborhoods with a real website
Your Google profile gets you on the map. Your website tells Google what you do in each area you serve. Make sure it has your name, address and phone number exactly as they appear on Google, a page for each core service, and a short page or section for each neighborhood you want more customers from. That’s how a business reaches customers across a 30-mile radius instead of just the block it sits on.

Track where every new customer comes from
Most owners guess which marketing works. Stop guessing. Have whoever answers the phone ask every new customer the same question: “Just so I can thank the right person, how did you hear about us?” If they say Google, add: “Was that on the map or in a search?”
Build the Google Sheet (name it Traffic Tracker):
- Row 1 columns: Date, Customer Source, Service Requested, Booked, Notes. Freeze row 1.
- Select the Source column and use Insert > Dropdown: Google Maps, Google Search, Social Media, Referral, Flyer or Mailer, Repeat Customer, Other, Unknown. Set it to reject other input so the totals stay clean.
- Add a Booked dropdown: Yes, No.
- Add a second tab called Weekly Summary that counts calls and bookings per source with COUNTIF and COUNTIFS.
- Share it with your front desk as Editor and put a sticky note with the question on the phone.
Move 9 · 10 minutes every Monday
Review your numbers and shift effort to what works
Give it four weeks before you change anything big. Then ask: Which source brought the most calls? The most booked jobs? Which one am I paying for that brings almost nothing? How many are “Unknown” (if it’s high, the question isn’t being asked)? Paste your rows into this prompt for a quick read:

Move 10 · Set it and forget it
Never let a call go unanswered
Every step above brings in calls. A call that goes to voicemail while you’re on a job is a customer who calls your competitor next. At minimum, set up a missed-call text-back so every caller gets an instant reply. If you’d rather not handle it yourself, our AI Phone System answers 24/7, texts back missed calls and books appointments.
The 5 things that get profiles suspended
- Adding keywords to your business name
- Paying for or trading gifts for reviews
- Listing a service area or address you don’t truly serve
- Putting phone numbers or links in your description or post text
- Making offers or deadlines you won’t honor
