Most Arizona small businesses don’t lose customers because their competitors spend more on ads. They lose them because the free fundamentals — the boring stuff that decides who shows up when someone searches “near me” — aren’t tight. This is the checklist we walk through on every free marketing report we run. Work through it top to bottom. None of it costs a dollar, and it’s in the order that moves the needle fastest.
1. Claim and fully complete your Google Business Profile
Your Google Business Profile (the box that shows up on Google and Maps) is the single most important thing for a local business — more than your website, for most searches. Claim it if you haven’t, then fill out every field: correct categories, hours, service area, phone, website, and a real description. An empty or half-finished profile tells Google it can’t trust you enough to rank you. A complete one does the opposite.
2. Pick the right primary category (and stop stuffing the rest)
Your primary category is how Google decides what you are. Pick the one that describes your core business — “Plumber,” “Tire Shop,” “Florist” — not five vaguely related ones. When you tell Google you’re a little bit of everything, it can’t rank you well for the one thing customers actually search for. One clear category beats ten fuzzy ones.
3. Make your name, address, and phone match everywhere (NAP)
This is the most common quiet leak we find. Your business name, address, and phone number (marketers call it “NAP”) need to be identical everywhere online — Google, Yelp, Facebook, your website, every directory. “Ste 100” on one and “Suite 100” on another, an old phone number on Yelp, a former address on Facebook — each mismatch chips away at Google’s confidence and pushes you down. Fixing it is free and it’s one of the fastest wins there is.
4. Add real photos — and keep adding them
Profiles with photos get far more clicks and calls than profiles without. Add your storefront, your team, your work, your products. Then keep going — a fresh photo every couple of weeks signals to Google that you’re an active, real business. Skip the stock images; customers and Google both prefer the real thing.
5. Build a steady trickle of reviews
Reviews are both a ranking factor and the thing that convinces a stranger to choose you. You don’t need hundreds overnight — you need a steady stream. Ask every happy customer, make it easy with a direct link, and reply to every review, good or bad. A business gaining a few honest reviews a month will out-rank a business that got fifty two years ago and went quiet.
6. Have a website customers can actually find
Even a simple one-page site does two big jobs: it gives Google something to connect your listing to, and it gives customers a reason to trust you before they call. It should load fast, work on a phone, and make your phone number and service area obvious. If you don’t have one, that’s usually the highest-value thing you can add. (This is one of the things we handle — see how we help Arizona businesses get found.)
7. Kill duplicate listings
If your business shows up as two listings at the same address — which happens more than you’d think, especially after a move or a rebrand — you’re competing with yourself. Duplicates split your reviews and confuse Google about which one to rank, so both underperform. Search your own business name in Google Maps and clean up anything that shouldn’t be there.
8. Post to your profile and answer questions
Google Business Profile lets you post updates, offers, and news right on your listing — and most of your competitors never do. A post a week keeps your profile active and gives customers a reason to reach out. Same with the Q&A section: seed it with the questions you get asked most, and answer new ones fast.
9. Get listed in the directories that matter
Consistent listings on the big directories — Yelp, Facebook, Apple Maps, Bing, and the ones specific to your industry — reinforce that NAP consistency from step 3 and give you more ways to be found. The key word is consistent: same name, address, and phone everywhere.
10. Check where you actually stand
You can’t fix what you can’t see. Before you spend a nickel on advertising, get an honest look at how you show up today — your Google presence, your website, your reviews, and the single biggest thing costing you customers right now. That’s exactly what our free report gives you, and you can see real examples on our marketing reports hub.
The bottom line
The businesses that win local search in Arizona usually aren’t the ones spending the most — they’re the ones whose free fundamentals are tight. Work down this list and you’ll be ahead of most of your competition. Want us to do it for you, or just show you where you stand?
