Not every local business works the same way. Some customers come to you (a shop or office); for others, you go to them (plumbers, landscapers, mobile services). Google treats these two types differently, and setting yours up correctly matters for how — and where — you rank.
Two kinds of local business
A storefront has a physical location customers visit, so proximity to that address drives a lot of its ranking. A service-area business travels to customers, so it can hide its address and instead list the areas it serves. Picking the right setup tells Google the truth about how you operate.
How to set up each
- Storefront: keep your address visible, nail your hours, and load up on photos of the place.
- Service-area: hide the address if you have no walk-in traffic, and list the specific cities you actually serve.
- Either way: keep your service areas realistic — don’t claim the whole state if you can’t get there.
- Both benefit from reviews, accurate info, and a website with real pages for the areas you cover.
The honest bit about distance
For the map pack, Google leans heavily on how close you are to the searcher — which is why stuffing far-off service areas won’t magically rank you there. Your website’s local pages are how you reach further; the profile is for genuine local proximity. Set both up right and you cover all your bases.
