We review dozens of Google Business Profiles for Phoenix-area small businesses every month, and the same five mistakes show up again and again — usually costing owners calls and customers without them ever realizing it.
1. Vague or Incomplete Categories
Google matches searches to your profile largely through your business categories. A primary category that’s too generic, or missing key secondary categories, means you simply don’t show up for searches you should be winning.
2. Few or No Photos
Profiles with recent, high-quality photos get significantly more clicks and direction requests than profiles with a handful of stock-looking images. Customers want to see your storefront, your team, and your work before they ever call.
3. Inconsistent Name, Address, and Phone Number
If your business name, address, or phone number is even slightly different across your website, Google profile, and directories like Yelp, it creates confusion that hurts your local ranking and erodes customer trust.
4. Ignoring Reviews
An unanswered review, especially a negative one, sits there for every future customer to see. Responding promptly and professionally shows you’re engaged, and it often turns a frustrated customer into a repeat one.
5. No Regular Posts or Updates
Google Business Profile lets you publish posts, offers, and updates directly to your listing. Businesses that use this consistently show Google, and customers, that they’re active — and active profiles get preferred placement in local search.
