Hiring a marketing agency is one of the higher-stakes decisions a local business owner makes. Do it right and your phone rings with new customers for years. Do it wrong and you’re out thousands of dollars with nothing to show for it — and you’ve lost months you can’t get back. The tricky part is that every agency sounds good on a sales call. So instead of listening to the pitch, ask better questions. Here are the seven that actually tell you who you’re dealing with.
1. Do you actually work with Arizona businesses, and do you understand local search?
National agencies and template-driven marketing mills treat a Peoria plumber the same as a software company in another state. Local search is its own game — Google Business Profiles, the map pack, reviews, and “near me” searches. Ask for Arizona examples. A local agency should be able to talk specifically about how customers in your city and industry actually find businesses like yours. (This is exactly what we focus on across all of Arizona.)
2. Who actually does the work — a senior person, or a junior team you’ll never meet?
Plenty of agencies win you with a polished salesperson, then hand your account to a rotating cast of juniors or an overseas team. Ask directly: “Who will be doing my work, and can I talk to them?” With a smaller local shop you often work with the owner directly — the person whose name and reputation are on the line. That accountability matters.
3. Can you show me a real report or a real result?
Anyone can claim results. Ask to see an actual example — a real report, a before-and-after, a client’s ranking or review growth. If an agency can’t show you what their work looks like, that’s a red flag. (We publish real free marketing reports so you can see exactly what we look at before you ever pay a cent.)
4. Do you prioritize the free fundamentals, or just try to sell me ads?
Some agencies push paid ads first because it’s easy to bill and easy to spend your money. But for most local businesses, the biggest wins are free: a complete, active Google Business Profile, consistent business information across the web, and a steady stream of recent reviews. A good agency fixes those first — then adds paid channels if they make sense. Ask what they’d do in your first 30 days. If the answer is “run ads,” be careful.
5. Am I locked into a long contract, or can I start small?
Long, rigid contracts protect the agency, not you. The confident ones let their results keep you around. Ask about contract length and how to leave. A month-to-month or short initial commitment says an agency believes in its own work.
6. How will you communicate with me, and how often?
The most common complaint about agencies isn’t bad work — it’s silence. You send your money and hear nothing. Ask exactly how and how often you’ll get updates, who your point of contact is, and how fast they respond. You should never have to wonder what you’re paying for.
7. Do you understand my industry?
A roofer, a dentist, and a flower shop need very different marketing. The searches, the seasons, the customer’s mindset — all different. You don’t need an agency that only does your trade, but you do need one that clearly gets how customers in your world make decisions. (See how we tailor it for contractors and home services, auto shops, dentists, and local shops.)
The short version
The best agency for your Arizona business is local enough to know your market, senior enough to be accountable, honest enough to fix the free stuff first, and clear enough that you always know what’s happening. Ask these seven questions and the right choice usually makes itself obvious.
