When people talk about local SEO, they usually mean the off-page stuff — reviews, links, your Google profile. But there’s a quieter half that happens right on your own website, and it’s the part you fully control. On-page SEO is simply the set of signals Google reads on your pages to figure out what you do and where you do it. Get these right and you make Google’s job easy, which is exactly what you want. Here they are in plain English, no jargon.
Title tags: your headline in search results
The title tag is the clickable blue line people see in Google. It’s prime real estate. A vague Home tells Google and searchers nothing. Something like Emergency Plumber in Peoria, AZ tells both exactly what you are and where. Put your main service and city up front on your most important pages. It’s one of the first things Google reads and one of the first things a searcher judges you by, so don’t waste it on your business name alone.
Headings and copy that name what you do
Your page headings and the words in your copy should plainly state your services and the places you serve. Not stuffed and awkward — just honest and clear. If you’re a Peoria HVAC company, the words air conditioning repair and Peoria should appear naturally where they belong, in a headline and in a sentence a real person would actually read. Google can’t guess what you don’t say. Say it in plain language, the same way you’d explain your work to a neighbor over the fence.
NAP: keep it identical everywhere
NAP stands for name, address, and phone number, and the rule is boring but important: keep them identical everywhere. The exact same spelling, suite number, and phone format. Mismatches make Google less sure you’re one trustworthy business, and that uncertainty can hold you back in the local results. Double-check that your NAP matches on:
- Your website footer and contact page
- Your Google Business Profile
- Yelp and other directory listings
- Your Facebook and other social profiles
Internal links and a page per city
Internal links — the links from one page of your site to another — help Google understand how your site fits together and which pages matter most. Link your service pages to each other and to your contact page using clear, descriptive words instead of click here. And if you serve more than one town, build a page for each city you serve instead of cramming them all onto one. A real page about your work in a specific city gives Google something concrete to rank for that city, and gives a local searcher a reason to feel you’re truly nearby.
Schema: a little label for the robots
Schema is a bit of behind-the-scenes code that spells out your details — business name, address, hours, reviews — in a format search engines read perfectly. Your visitors never see it, but it removes any doubt about the facts of your business and can help you earn those richer search listings with stars and hours. You don’t need to hand-code it; most modern sites and plugins can add it for you. It’s the on-page equivalent of labeling your boxes before the movers arrive: a small effort that saves a lot of confusion.
