Phoenix is one of the biggest cities in the country. If you run a shop or a trade business in Peoria, that can feel like a problem. Every plumber, roofer and dentist in the Valley seems to be fighting for the same customers, and some of them have bigger budgets than you.
Here is what I tell owners. You are not competing with all of Phoenix. You are competing for the customers close to you, searching for the exact thing you do. That is a much smaller and much more winnable group.
Why the big city is not as big as it looks
Google shows different results to different people. Someone searching for a plumber from a home in Peoria usually sees different businesses than someone searching from downtown Phoenix. Distance from the searcher is part of how Google decides who to show.
That works in your favor. You do not need to beat every business in the metro area. You need to be the best answer for the people near you.
Stop chasing the biggest search phrase
Many owners want to rank for something short and broad, like a trade plus the word Phoenix. Those searches are crowded. They are also often not the customers you want. Someone in Chandler is not going to drive to Peoria for a small repair.
Aim at the searches where you have a real edge. Those usually have three parts: what you do, the specific job, and where. For example, a service plus a neighborhood or nearby city you actually work in.
A simple way to find your real competition
You can do this with your phone in about ten minutes. No special software.
- Write down three things a customer might type to find you. Use plain words, the way a customer would say it.
- Search each one from your phone. Stand in your shop or sit in your driveway so the results match where your customers are.
- Look at the top three businesses that show up on the map. Write down their names, how many reviews they have, and how recent the latest review is.
- Open their Google profiles. Look at their photos, the services they list, and whether they answer reviews.
- Notice the gaps. Maybe nobody lists a service you do well. Maybe the top result has no recent photos. Maybe nobody replies to reviews.
That list is your map. It shows you where a small business can actually move up.
Make your area clear to Google and to people
Once you know your gaps, tell people clearly where you work. Say the cities and areas you really serve on your website and in your Google Business Profile. Be honest here. Do not list places you do not serve. If you work in Peoria, Glendale and Surprise, say that.
If you want the longer version of how to do this safely, I wrote about why you need a real page for every city you serve. The key is that each page has to be useful on its own, not a copy with the town name swapped.
Use what a big company cannot
A national company cannot say they know your neighborhood. You can. Mention the streets, the weather problems, the kinds of homes and buildings in your area, and the jobs you do there often. Real photos of your own work in your own area help too. This is what a stranger scrolling through results trusts.
Your task for this week
Do the ten-minute search test above. Pick one gap you found and fix just that one. Add a missing service to your Google profile, upload five fresh photos of recent local jobs, or reply to your last few reviews. Then write down the date, and check again in a month.
