How to Read Your Google Business Profile Insights Like a Pro

Published

Why staying active matters more than being established — Sureway Marketing

Buried inside your Google Business Profile is a little dashboard most owners glance at and close. It’s usually called Performance or Insights, and it quietly tells you how people are finding you and what they do next. Learning to read it is like getting the box score for your local presence. You don’t need to be a data person. You just need to know which numbers matter and what to do when they move.

What Insights is actually showing you

At its core, the report answers two questions: how did people find you, and what did they do about it. You’ll see how many people landed on your profile, whether they found you by your business name or by a service like roofer near me, and then the actions they took — calls, direction requests, website clicks, and messages. Think of the first part as who walked up to your window, and the second as who actually knocked. Both halves matter, and they tell you very different things about your marketing.

The numbers worth watching

You could drown in these metrics. Don’t. A few tell most of the story:

  • Calls — the closest thing to a ready-to-buy customer picking up the phone
  • Direction requests — people planning to physically come to you
  • Website clicks — folks who want a little more before they commit
  • Searches by category vs. your name — how many discover you cold vs. already know you

If you check nothing else, watch calls and how people found you. Those two point straight at whether your profile is bringing in new business or just confirming what regulars already knew.

Discovery vs. direct searches

That mix is worth a closer look. When most of your views come from people typing your business name, that’s good news for your reputation, but it means new customers aren’t finding you cold. When you start showing up for service searches — electrician near me, urgent care open now — that’s the profile earning you customers who didn’t know you existed yesterday. Watching that balance shift toward discovery searches over the months is one of the best signs your local presence is genuinely growing rather than just holding steady.

What to do about the numbers

Numbers are only useful if they change what you do. Lots of views but few calls? Your photos, reviews, or hours might be turning people off, so tighten them up. Plenty of calls but they’re not booking? The gap is in how those calls get handled, not in your marketing. Seeing more discovery searches month over month? Whatever you’re doing is working, so do more of it. If the picture feels murky and you’d like a plain-English read on where you stand, a quick free marketing report can connect the dots between these numbers and the fixes that matter most.

Check your Insights once a month, not once a day. Trends over weeks tell the truth; a single slow Tuesday tells you nothing. A few minutes of honest reading each month will teach you more about your customers than any guess ever could.
