Anyone can create a Google Business Profile in a few minutes. Setting one up so it actually brings in customers takes a little more care — but none of it is complicated. Here’s the plain-English version of doing it right, in the order that matters.
Start with the name and category
Use your real business name exactly as it appears on your sign — no stuffing in keywords or extra cities, which is against Google’s rules and can get a listing suspended. Then choose the primary category that best matches your core service. This single field does more to shape who finds you than almost anything else on the profile.
Fill in the details customers ask about
Add your hours (including holidays), your service area or address, a clear description, and every service you offer with a short explanation. Think about the questions a customer asks before they call, and make sure the profile answers them without anyone having to pick up the phone.
Add real photos and keep them fresh
Upload a clean logo, a cover image, photos of your actual work, and a friendly photo of you. People trust a face and real work far more than stock images. Then add a few new photos each month so the profile always looks active and current.
Turn on the finishing touches
Add a booking or call button, turn on messaging if you’ll actually answer it, post a short update each week, and reply to reviews as they come in. These small habits tell both customers and Google that you’re open, attentive, and worth choosing.
