Ask almost any local business owner what they wish they had more of, and “good reviews” is near the top of the list. Reviews are one of the most powerful things you own — a steady stream of honest, recent feedback helps the next customer choose you with confidence. The key word is honest. Here’s how to ask the right way, and what to steer clear of.
Just ask — at the right moment
The best time to ask is right after you’ve done great work, while the customer is happy and it’s fresh. A simple, personal ask beats anything fancy: “If you were happy with the job, a quick Google review really helps folks find us.” Most satisfied customers are glad to help — they just need the nudge.
Make it one tap
Remove every bit of friction. Send a direct link to your Google review page by text or email so the customer lands right on the form. The fewer steps between “sure, I’ll do that” and a posted review, the more reviews you’ll actually get.
Reply to every review
Thank people for good reviews, and respond to less-positive ones calmly and professionally. It shows future customers that you’re engaged and that you care — and a thoughtful reply to a rare critical review can build more trust than a wall of five-star ratings.
Never gate, buy, or fake it
Don’t offer discounts in exchange for reviews, don’t screen customers to send only the happy ones to Google, and never post fake reviews. Beyond being against Google’s rules and grounds for penalties, it’s the kind of shortcut that catches up with you. Genuine reviews, honestly earned, are the only ones worth having.
