Of all the fields on your Google Business Profile, your category may be the one that does the most quiet work. It tells Google what you actually do and which searches you belong in. Get it right and the right customers find you; get it vague and you blend into the crowd. Here’s how to choose it well.
Pick the most specific primary category
Your primary category carries the most weight, so choose the one that describes your core service as exactly as possible. “Roofing contractor” beats “contractor,” and “emergency plumber” may fit better than “plumber.” Specific tells Google precisely when to show you, instead of leaving it to guess.
Add secondary categories for the rest
If you offer more than one thing, add secondary categories for those services — but only ones you genuinely provide. They help you appear for related searches without diluting your main focus. Don’t stuff the list with categories you don’t actually serve; accuracy is what keeps the profile trustworthy.
Check what similar businesses use
It’s worth seeing which categories strong local competitors have chosen, since it hints at what Google associates with your kind of business. Use it as a sanity check, not a copy job — your categories should always match the real work you do, following Google’s own guidelines.
